Welcome to Green Frigate

Titles published under the Green Frigate Books imprint aim to explore the horizons of the natural and built environments, and the relations of humans within them. The goal of the imprint is to reach its readership by producing works that fall in the cracks between those offered by traditional academic and popular presses. Specific categories include ‘Design, Interiors and Architecture’ and ‘The natural and built environments’. In common with Libri Books, the imprint should be of interest particularly for members of ‘communities of practice’ in the natural and built environments.

Loving Lebus: Looking into Lebus Furniture

Loving Lebus encapsulates the changing styles of furniture over time. With comprehensive notes placing Lebus furniture in context the author has selected the best of the firm's advertisements, catalogue images, photographs and Lebus furniture pieces today. Antique and vintage – Lebus furniture is enjoying a resurgence. We are once again, ‘Loving Lebus’. Paul has nurtured a passion for all things Lebus. His first book Harris Lebus: A Romance with the Furniture Trade went behind the scenes to look into how Lebus furniture was made. Now the Lebus story is complete – Loving Lebus: Looking into Lebus Furniture is another labour of love.

About the author: Paul has a BA (Honours) in Humanities and another in Fine Art. Originally from Bath, he forged a career developing services with and for older people; he was Strategic Planning Officer for older people's services in Southwark and Chief Executive Officer for Age Concern (now AgeUK) in Harrow. His paintings are owned by Lenny Henry, and the late Cilla Black. Harris Lebus – A Romance with the Furniture Trade was his first foray into authorship.

Reviews for Loving Lebus:

‘Loving Lebus: Looking into Lebus Furniture’ - what a fantastic book! It is full of interesting socio-economic history as well as great furniture. It is particularly useful as a reference guide / archive as it has helped us to link furniture pieces that we have had previously (but were not able to attribute them to a specific manufacturer) to Lebus. The book provided a good visual context, mixing images of older furniture in original condition with up-cycled and reimagined pieces. It is great for mid-century enthusiasts, collectors and dealers like us as well as a general readership. We would certainly use this as a reference tool in the future. We think that Lebus as an historic furniture manufacturer has hitherto been overlooked and overshadowed by those who are better known. In the world of vintage in which we live furniture daily, most likely we would have veered away from Lebus pieces in the past (despite the fact they were well-made) simply because we couldn’t give a potential buyer the name of the maker! Furthermore, the Lebus name has generally not been passed around in conversation between dealers and consequently Lebus-made furniture has generally not been proactively sought after. We are most likely guilty of having overlooked Lebus pieces in the past. For example, we would never have known that Lebus made modular room dividers. And now, through this book we know they did! Being able to attribute particular pieces to Lebus will, not only increase resale prices, but more importantly raise the profile of Lebus. This book (and the author’s previous one) will now give the furniture manufacturer Lebus the recognition it so justly deserves.”

‘Loving Lebus’ is an amazing book. It gives in-depth detail about the furniture maker Lebus; how they evolved from making traditional hand crafted furniture right through to mid-century modern designs becoming one of, if not, the largest manufacturers in the UK. As a trader in quality antique furniture, this is a valuable resource. If you have an interest in the history of furniture design through the twentieth century and want to learn about how fashion changed then this is a must read.

It is a splendid volume and I much look forward to reading it.   The amount of wonderful material you have found and your research ability are amazing.
