Autumn's Turn

Kathleen Rogers’ Autumn’s Turn, illustrated by Octavian Fitzherbert, is runner up in the Children’s/Juvenile Early Readers/Chapter Books (Fiction) category of the 2023 Indie Book Awards.

This is a children’s story about the seasons.  Autumn refuses to step aside for her sister, Winter, when it’s her turn.  Winter gets increasingly worried as time goes on without her getting the chance to do her work.  Spring and Summer also appeal to Autumn, as does Mother Nature, but Autumn refuses to listen.   Eventually, Father Time talks some sense into her, and she steps aside for winter and the other seasons.

The story starts with an overlong autumn.  The people are happy, initially, thinking they’ll have a shorter winter.  However, the people’s praise for this lovely season goes to Autumn’s head, and she refuses to step aside for winter, with disastrous consequences.

Children will enjoy reading about the different personalities of the seasons and will also be gaining an insight into how nature works.  Just as the people in the story, the reader may come to appreciate all the seasons and the important role they play.

About the Author: Kathleen Rogers started writing children’s stories for her nephews and niece, who always requested ‘made-up’ stories, preferably with them in it. She also wrote for her friends’ children. Now she writes for a new generation, her latest reader being a 7-year-old neighbour. She's delighted to be able to reach even more children with her first published story, Autumn’s Turn. Kathleen is currently living in Lucan, Co. Dublin. She enjoys nature in all its seasons, and especially loves being in the nearby Dublin and Wicklow hills or the magnificent mountains of Co. Kerry.

About the Illustrator: Living between Ireland and Poland. Octavian likes a drawing that makes you feel like you're on holiday. He enjoys working in colour but finds it’s a journey. He likes to draw places, broken things, good designs, people, and dancers... and also, trees. Octavian studied Fine Art in Dublin for three years, and then, as he started to focus on cartoons, he studied animation in BCFE, and also in Dublin. He likes to read stories and enjoys the fun of illustrating them and how this adds to the story.

Autumn’s Turn is a Child’s Eye publication. Child’s Eye is the new home for children’s literature in the Redshank imprint of Libri Publishing. Designed to appeal to children and parents Child's Eye publishes quirky stories with an edge that deal with a variety of subjects from the child’s viewpoint. Scary, cruel, or just downright funny these stories invite the discerning reader to step into the weird and sometimes disconcerting world of a child’s imaginings. Child's Eye books can also address issues affecting children such as bullying, family difficulties and health and can provide the stimulus for valuable conversations.
